In 2022, we published a textbook for undergraduates titled Making Sense of the News: News Literacy Lessons for 21st-Century Citizens

Making sense of the news has never been more challenging. But it is possible to overcome those challenges and identify reliable, actionable information that will inform our lives as 21st-century citizens. It means taking the time to use our critical thinking skills and apply a series of new concepts and tools. That’s exactly what this textbook, and our news literacy course, is designed to help you do.

As an online publication, Making Sense of the News is never finished. We revise it every semester with fresh examples from the news and updated lessons that reflect the rapidly changing worlds of media and communication.

The textbook has earned praise from the Stony Brook University students who have used it. “The textbook was by far the easiest digital textbook I’ve used in college,” wrote one student in an anonymous survey. Another student wrote: “I found the textbook very helpful and useful. I hope I can keep my access to this text book after I graduate Stony Brook too.”
